The petitioners give a brief overview of the process of choosing a location for and planning the BER airport since the early 1990s. Due to the frequency of flights during the day and to some extent, at least in the case of post office and government aircrafts, also at night, they claim that Berlin Brandenburg (BER) airport, which is currently under construction, will be damaging to the environment and public health, in particular in nearby Müggelheim. In their opinion, it is unacceptable that the nature conservation and drinking water protection areas around Müggelheim are being ignored. The airport also does not meet the objective of a 24-hour airport for the region, which offers scope for development. Instead, it will be a shuttle airport for existing hubs in Europe. Lastly, the petitioners object to the northern runway of the BER airport and recommend its immediate closure; they call for Tegel airport to be kept open until a primary hub airport commensurate with the needs of a capital city can be brought into operation.
