It is time for the cities of Galway and Waterford to be accessible again by regional air services. Especially with Brexit, connecting Western Ireland and South East Ireland to an EU hub like Amsterdam Airport Schiphol makes a lot of sense. Galway City has major traffic problems and being able to take a direct flight from Galway rather than having to take additional ways to Knock, Shannon or Dublin would be a time saver for many. Waterford Airport is currently being expanded with public funds, but so far there are no commercial flights. It would be a great pity and of course inefficient, if this regional airport would not be used. Furthermore, it would be of interest to connect the two cities of Galway and Waterford, which currently takes just over 5 hours by bus or train. From Amsterdam, there are worldwide connections to all corners of the world. Therefore, it would make sense to include two daily flights to and from Amsterdam in the flight schedule. In order to implement this route in the most environmentally friendly way possible, the use of 70-seat ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft is the best solution.
Proposed flight schedule:
1. Galway dep. 06:35 - Waterford arr. 07:15 / dep. 07:40 - Amsterdam arr. 10:55
2. Amsterdam dep. 11:35 - Waterford arr. 12:55 / dep. 13:20 - Galway arr. 14:00
3. Galway dep. 14:35 - Waterford arr. 15:15 / dep. 15:40 - Amsterdam arr. 18:55
4. Amsterdam dep. 19:35 - Waterford arr. 20:55 / dep. 21:20 - Galway arr. 22:00

Reason

  • Connecting Galway and Waterford to an EU hub with connecting flights worldwide
  • Strengthening regional connectivity between Western Ireland and South East Ireland
  • Growing tourism in the regions
  • Reopen Galway and Waterford airports with hundreds of jobs directly and indirectly linked to the airports
  • Environmentally friendly travel thanks to turboprop aircraft and elimination of many journeys to more distant airports
