I have just added translations the main locale languages here in Vanuatu, that google does not translate, Bislama. This should help reach a wider audience


New petition description:

This petition is to show Port Vila Municipality and The Vanuatu Government that residents of Port Vila would like their residential areas protected from inappropriate buildings and commercial activities.

We understand that industry, shops and warehouses are an important part of our town. However we strongly believe they should be built and operated in appropriate areas, our residential zones are not the place for such things.

The monstrosities being build in Tassiriki behind Port Vila International School (PVIS) are an example of a major failing by the Municipality to uphold the residential zoning of an area. 3 massive warehouses have been built in a residential zone, on an unmaintained dirt road, nestled between people’s homes, directly behind Port Vila International School. There are daycare centres on either side of the school on the same road. Students and residents have been listening to building all year, from sun-up to sun-down, 7 days a week. This would be understandable if it were homes being build but instead it is warehouses with the knowledge that the noise and industry will continue indefinitely. The department of environment has confirmed that there are no environmental permits for these warehouses, how many other similar builds have happened without the appropriate permits?

Our concerns are:Increased traffic, and heavy trafficIncreased wear and tear on roadsInadequate parkingDevaluing our residential propertiesDrainage issuesBlack and grey water issuesIncreased rubbishIncreased pests and rodentsIncreased people lingering around multiple school and day care centresIncreased noise pollutionIncreased lagoon pollutionThe precedent this sets for commercial activities to take place in residential neighbourhoods.

On this last note we have now heard rumours of other commercial activities being planned on the same small stretch of road:A large supermarket to compete with ABM Tassiriki.A Chinese shop and restaurantA workshop/garage.None of these things belong in a residential neighbourhood. To ignore the zoning and build them anyway shows a great disrespect of the residents in the area and we want action to have these buildings stopped and removed.

There are similar issues in Elluk and Bellevue and we want the municipality to put a stop to them and have them moved to areas with the correct zoning.
