Petiția se adresează: The Swiss Federal Council and Parliament
We, the undersigned, call for the recognition of English as an official language in Switzerland. This change would facilitate communication, support economic growth, and promote inclusivity in a multilingual society.
motive
English:
The motivation for this petition is not to replace local languages, but to add English as one of the official languages to complement the existing ones. Swiss German, French, Italian, and Romansh will remain essential parts of Swiss identity. Official recognition of English would bring multiple benefits: enhanced global competitiveness, improved education and career opportunities, better tourism and emergency services, and increased inclusivity for foreign residents. It’s a step towards aligning Switzerland with a globalized world while preserving its rich multilingual heritage.

We have a lot of companies in Switzerland whose use English language in daily activities and also English is most important international language.
It’s not to change the local languages,it’s to add English as one of the official languages to complement the existing ones. Swiss German, French, Italian, and Romansh will remain essential and cherished parts of Swiss identity. But officially recognizing English would bring several benefits to Swiss people:
1. Enhanced Global Competitiveness
Switzerland thrives on its strong economy, and much of its success is tied to international business. English is the global language of commerce, science, and diplomacy. Making English official would streamline communication with international partners, attract foreign investment, and help Swiss businesses expand globally.
2. Improved Education and Career Opportunities
English is already taught in schools, but its official recognition would open doors to more advanced educational resources and programs. This would better prepare Swiss students for international careers, giving them a competitive edge in the global job market.
3. Boosted Tourism and Hospitality
Switzerland is a top destination for tourists from around the world. By embracing English, the tourism sector could improve the experience for visitors, making it easier for them to navigate and engage with local businesses. This, in turn, would boost revenue for Swiss businesses.
4. Streamlined Public and Emergency Services
Language barriers can be a significant issue when accessing essential services, especially in emergencies. Making English official would ensure that services like emergency hotlines (e.g., 117 for police or 144 for medical emergencies) could accommodate English speakers more effectively. 5. Increased Inclusivity for Foreign Residents
With almost 30% of Switzerland’s population being foreign residents, many of whom speak English, making English official would foster a sense of inclusivity. It would help integrate these residents more effectively while maintaining respect for Switzerland’s unique cultural and linguistic diversity.
6. Support for Swiss Locals in International Settings
As the world becomes more interconnected, Swiss citizens themselves would benefit from a stronger command of English in their travels and interactions abroad. Official status would normalize its use and improve proficiency across generations.
By adding English as an official language, Switzerland would ensure bette

I'm leaving in Switzerland for 12 years, always working and never had enough time to go to school and improve my German.
If Switzerland would accept English as an official language, I could use my background and get a better job and have a better life quality.
I'm very grateful for everything Switzerland gave me and really would like to use my skills to remain in Switzerland doing something that I really like and continue investing to Switzerland economy.
