»Dear Mr. Verstraeten,

I’m the initiator of an online petition with the aim of allowing citizens living in Belgium to visit their relatives in neighbouring countries.
Despite the fact that the R-value is similar in all neighbouring countries and despite the fact that all of them have introduced similar measures to fight the pandemic, people in Belgium are not allowed to visit their closest relatives abroad, whereas domestic family meetings are allowed by the Belgian government.
Our petition has already been signed by more than 7.600 people with a growing number day by day:

I received a lot of e-mails in which people expressed their wish to start a class action to see their parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren and closest friends again after more than two months.
Some of them gave me your name and your e-mail address when they read an article about your commitment to civil rights in times of the Corona pandemic.
So many people are suffering mental pain for not being able to visit their loved ones on the other side of the border nor being allowed to welcome them at their homes in Belgium. By crossing the border illegally they risk a fine of €250.
Our East Belgian politicians have urged Mr De Crem to open the border as quickly as possible, but he doesn't listen to them, because the German speaking community only makes up less than 0.7 per cent of the Belgian population. A lot of people living here have close family ties and friendships in neigbouring Germany and Luxembourg.
In fact, all regions close to neigbouring countries are affected by the closure of the border.
Are you willing to help us to open the border again?

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely yours

Lutz-René Jusczyk«
