Petition is addressed to: EU-Commission

The EU is currently working on a way to more clearly define the term „plastic“. When it comes to fossil-based synthetic materials, the classification is clear. But wood-based cellulose fibers could also be classified as plastic. That cannot be allowed to happen!

This petition is therefore urging the EU Commission and national governments to ease the way forwards for the renewable raw material wood. For us the matter is already clear: wood-based cellulose fibers are THE alternative - under no circumstances should they be lumped together with fossil-based synthetic materials in a „plastics’ category“!

Reason

Since I am a working woman and a mother, I try to use sustainable products in my hectic everyday life. Wherever possible I do without single-use plastic, whenever I can, I replace it. I am always very sensitive when something seems unfair to me. And, I find it great when companies use their own know-how to create fair alternatives. I would quite simply not find it fair if plastic and wood were to be lumped together, if the alternative to single-use plastic was presented as the cause of a problem, for which it is actually the solution. For this reason, I think it important to strictly separate wood and plastic so that the labelling of single-use products remains fair.

According to estimates from Global2000, around one third of the 400 million tons of plastic produced per annum, finds its way into our soil and inland waterways. Additional tons are added to this month by month. Last year, the EU Commission took an important step to drastically reduce the environmental burden represented by single-use plastic. The „Single-Use Plastics Directive“ bans certain single-use plastics products as a whole (e.g. plastic straws). For others – such as wet wipes – it demands labelling. This means that in the future we will be able to recognize with greater ease whether a single-use product contains plastic or not.

Anyone who does say no to single-use plastics, needs alternatives!

Say YES to wood – your signature matters!

Derived from the renewable raw material wood from certified and controlled forests, the cellulose fibers are further processed into personal care and cosmetic applications, feminine hygiene products and wet wipes. And wood-based cellulose fibers remain what they were: 100 percent biodegradable and compostable. True to the motto: Nature returns to nature.

That’s why we Say YES to wood!
