Given the way the Covid-19 pandemic is unfolding, there is a real risk of exceeding available capacity on intensive care units (ICUs). Hence, avoidable individual behavior that increases the risk of a person needing ICU support, or the amount of time spent in ICU directly translates to an increased loss of life.
We hence propose a temporary ban of the sale of tobacco and other smoking related products. We are aware that this will be unpleasant for many smokers and difficult for some - likely needing assistance to do without smoking.
The medical literature shows relevant short term benefits of smoking cessation even after 4-8 weeks, so on a here relevant time scale if we expect the Covid-19 pandemic to be a dominating topic in the coming months. We can save lives by temporarily banning smoking.
Begründung
This will save lives, for exceeding capacity less means that our medical doctors will have to make fewer decisions who gets access to respiratory support and who is left to die. So, this actually directly benefits smokers (reducing their risk of dying from Covid-19), but clearly also everyone else.
