The petitioner calls for removing the phrase “racial origin” in article 9, paragraph 1 of the General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679. He claims that the term “ethnic origin” is sufficient to protect individuals. He argues that the construct of race should be avoided in legal texts given that it is a pseudoscientific term at odds with the fact that people do not differ genetically. He claims that collecting data as regards racial origin may lead to discrimination.
